Camouflage heart outline with cross

Colour · Flash

The image shows a heart drawn as a thick outline, with a stepped cross-like shape running diagonally through its lower left side. Both shapes are filled with a brown, tan and dark camouflage pattern rather than solid ink. The background is plain cream, and the composition is centred with the heart filling most of the frame.

Dear Danny, the larches on Hollin Copse have turned the colour of old rope, and the floor under them is a mess of bracken and dead needles that breaks the light up so badly you can't tell a stone from a sitting hen. Dad always said you could walk through that wood for an hour and never see a man standing still in it. I stood still for forty minutes this morning waiting on a roe doe, and she never came, so I suppose the old man was right about something.

I found your camo jacket in the boot room, the one gone grey at the elbows. Mum had folded it with the sleeves tucked in, the way she did when she still thought you'd be home for Sunday. I've patched the left cuff with a square of green oilcloth from the shed, stitched it with thread from her sewing tin, and it looks more honest than the original ever did. Nobody will notice but me, which I suppose is how it should be.

Gareth from the estate came up about the fence on Tuesday. He asked after you as if you were off at university, and I didn't have the heart to say otherwise. He nodded at the gatepost, the one we cut the heart into the year you were nine and I was seven, and said it wanted repainting before the rain got into the grain. I told him I'd see to it.

So this afternoon I went down with a tin of brown and a brush, scraped back the moss, and the cut lines were still there under the lichen: the big curve of the heart, and your crooked cross where you'd gone over the lower edge with the penknife three times because you wanted it to look like a blade. I left the crossing as it was. Write when you can. The fence is up, the doe has gone elsewhere, and the gatepost is brown again.
