The rubber stamp lives in the drawer under the register at Seaview House, between a dead fountain pen and a tin of drawing pins, and on your first morning Mrs Pargeter lays it in your palm as if she is handing over a set of keys. It is a plain black heart with a small notch at the top, worn smooth at one edge from years of thumbs.

Everything that leaves the house gets stamped. Towels, pillowcases, the postcards on the rack by the door, even the eggs when Mr Sayle brings them up from the farm. The heart means Seaview, she says, and the notch is where the ink runs thickest, so you press firmly and never twice. You learn to tap it in one clean motion, the way you would knock on a door you expect to be answered.
In October, while the lodgers thin out and the wind starts rattling the sash, you find a shoebox of postcards behind the boiler cupboard. Each one is addressed to a Mr Thomas Hollis care of the pier kiosk, each one stamped on the corner, and none of them has a postage stamp. Mrs Pargeter says he stayed in room four one summer and never once asked for post. You sit on the cold step and count them: thirty-one.
The last card is blank except for the heart. You dip the pad, press once, and walk it down the front in the grey wind, past the shuttered donkey rides and the gulls quarrelling over chips. At the post box you hold it a moment longer than you need to, then let it drop.
