Campervan, cliffs and flowers on a leg
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a red campervan driving along a road, with striped cliffs and a green coastal strip behind it, a large red faceted gem in the sky and a row of small red gems on the ground. Orange and yellow flowers sit in the lower right, and dotted lines curve around the edges of the design. Bold black outlines frame the bright colours, with stippled dotwork shading in the road and sky.

The van had been Walt's, and it still smelled of his pipe and the sour milk he never got round to clearing from the fridge. Ruth drove it along the coast road with the windows down and a biscuit tin rattling on the passenger seat. Inside were forty-one red stones she had prised from the striped cliffs at Hallow Cove, each one worn by the sea into a shape like a small heart.

Walt had wanted to be buried facing the water. The council said no to that, and so did the vicar, so instead Ruth had planted nasturtiums in the grass verge along the lane, orange and yellow and a red that looked wet in the sun. He had said they would grow where nothing else would, and they had, pushing through gravel and bus-stop litter for nine summers now. Every time she passed them she half expected him to be out there with a trowel, grumbling about the drainage.
At the headland she stopped where the road bent round the cliff. The sky was the blue of a cheap enamel mug, and a single red sun hung over the sea like a stone held up to the light. She climbed out, opened the tin, and began laying the gems along the verge, one every few paces, the way Walt used to scatter seed.
By the time she got back to the van, the lowest nasturtiums had already turned their faces to the light, and the first stone she had set down lay half hidden in their leaves. She did not look back at the cliff. She turned the key, and the engine coughed, then caught.
