Colourful cartoon characters on an upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows cartoon characters, including a yellow figure holding a guitar and a silver, robot-like character with large eyes and a smiling face, set against green grass and a purple creature at the lower edge. The linework is bold and the figures are shaded with smooth highlights and gradients. Bright yellow, green, blue and purple ink dominate, and the two photos show the design from front and side angles on the upper arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tin man of Harrowmere had a face like a kettle lid and two round eyes that could never stop looking surprised, and he was the only thing in the valley the lamplighter's daughter would walk beside after dark. Nobody had built him. He came down the river in a barrel the spring the bridge fell, climbed out at the mill with his hat dented and his jaw clicking, and asked the miller where a fellow might find a tune.

The miller sent him to Bram, who played a guitar with a belly the colour of marigolds. Bram was a yellow fellow with a moustache like a ribbon and a cloak he wore even in August, and he had been the best player in three counties until his strings went slack with pride. He tuned the guitar for the tin man on the bank of the meadow, where the grass grew so thick the rabbits lost their way, and they played until the purple creature from under the willow crept out to listen, its ears flat with wonder.

Then came the dry year, and the king sent his tax men to take the instruments as payment, because music, the king said, was a luxury and a kingdom needs silver. The tin man only smiled, which made the tax men nervous. He climbed the willow, dropped his hat into the river, and played one note so long and sweet that the river ran uphill to hear it. The tax men walked home humming, and the king never could explain why.

The grass in Harrowmere is still the greenest in the land, and if you stand on the bank at dusk you can hear a guitar being tuned somewhere under the willow.
