Stand mixer and flowers on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A teal stand mixer with a polished steel bowl and a red mesh whisk sits at the centre of the design, with orange flowers and green leaves above and below it. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with solid fills and soft shading on the metal and appliance body. The design wraps the upper arm, and a patterned top and tattoo flash on a wall are visible in the background.

Sorrel Gap customs had seen smuggled cheese, wet tobacco and a goat that claimed to be a nun, but nothing had prepared Dobrin for the crate in the back of Ilinka's van. He lifted the lid, found a teal machine with a steel bowl sitting in straw, and asked her what on earth it was. It was for beating egg whites, she said. Her sister's wedding cake would not rise without it, and she had been beating eggs by hand since she was small enough to stand on a stool.

The duty on foreign machinery was four hundred and twelve, a figure Dobrin had learnt the way other men learnt psalms. Ilinka did not argue. She plugged the machine into the hut's one socket, fitted the red mesh whisk, and set it turning. The whisk gathered air the way a choir gathers breath, and within a minute the bowl held a white cloud that stood up on its own. Dobrin's mother had cooked for the border post for thirty years on a stove with one good ring. He watched the cloud rise and forgot the form in his hand.
He stamped the crate free before the shift bell and never asked the sister's name. The next March a parcel came through the gap addressed to the hut, a round loaf wrapped in a tea towel, with a single orange flower pressed into the crust. Dobrin ate it standing at the window, still warm, and the ring of his mother's stove seemed to hum in the room. Each March after that a loaf came through the gap, and Dobrin never once wrote the duty back into the book.
