Candy Land board game sleeve on an arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo wraps around the arm as a board game scene, with a gingerbread house, lollipop trees, gumdrops, candy canes and a winding candy path marked START. The lines are bold and the shapes are filled with flat, saturated colour, with some soft shading on the sky and foliage. The two photographs show the front and side of the arm against a dark background with blue dots.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fourth time the card turned up double purple, Ada sat back and refused to move. Her gingerbread man stood on the path just past the candy cane forest, and her grandad said the rules were the rules and a gingerbread house was no place to wait out an evening. Outside, the street lamps had gone out one by one since six, so the kitchen was lit only by a candle stub in a saucer and the board itself, which had never needed batteries.

Grandad Walt had kept the board in the bottom drawer of the dresser since his wife died, and he brought it out every power cut, which in Hollin Row meant most Thursdays. He knew the Kingdom of Sweetmoor the way other men knew the football tables. He could tell you which lollipop wood had the sticky patch by the stream, and that the gumdrop mountains were always a little further than they looked. Ada counted squares with one finger and asked whether the candy cane gate was locked. 'Only if you can't say the password,' he said. 'What's the password?' 'You have to draw it.'

She drew a card that sent her back to the lollipop trees. She groaned, then laughed, and walked her token backwards through the pink tulips and red lollipops, over the stripes of blue, yellow, green and orange that wound along the path like the lining of a coat. Near the edge of the board she stopped on a square with a small gingerbread house and a chimney that leaned a little. The path didn't end at the house. It ran straight on to START, the same painted word, as though nobody ever really finished the game.

'Same again, then,' Walt said, and rolled the dice with his good hand. Ada set her gingerbread man back on the start square and reached for the dice, while the candle sank lower in its saucer and the lamps stayed dark all along Hollin Row.
