Tarot sun and moon with crystal ball on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo on the outer thigh shows two tarot-style cards, one with a smiling sun labelled THE SUN and one with a crescent moon labelled THE MOON, framing a purple and pink crystal ball with cloud swirls. A pink and orange rayed sun glow sits above the crystal ball, with sparkling stars and teardrop pendants hanging below. The thick black outlines are filled with pastel shades and fine dotted texture, and the composition is centred on the design against plain skin and a white wall.

Mrs Ferriby shuffled the cards on the oilcloth as though they had personally let her down, and you pretended not to watch the window, where the Sunday tide was dragging itself back over the groynes. The boarding house smelled of vinegar and damp wool. Upstairs, somebody's wireless was playing a dance band two notes flat, and the gas fire ticked like a clock that had lost its nerve.

She laid out the Sun first, a grinning yellow face in its green square, then the Moon, a silver crescent with a face of its own, painted in the same loose hand. "Both at once is rare," she said. "Usually one of them is sulking." She tapped the glass ball on the sideboard, the one with pink cloud swirls caught inside like sugar floss. "Don't look at the pictures. Look in here. The pictures are for people who need telling."
You looked. You saw a purple dusk folding over a pink sea, and in it, very small, your own face holding a teacup. Nothing else. Mrs Ferriby sighed, took the Moon card back, and said she had painted both the winter Harold went out on the trawler and never came back for his wages. She said it the way she might mention the price of coal.
At dawn you walked the front with the tide out and the chalk cliffs going pink at the edges. You left the Sun face-up on the sideboard for her. You kept the Moon, because somebody has to keep the night shift, and because it was the only card that had ever looked at you as if it knew you would come back.
