Mountain lake scene in a rope circle on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A circular design shows snow-capped mountain peaks above a lake with rows of pine trees on the shore, framed by a rope border and a band of stylised clouds or waves. The shading is bold black outline with smooth grey and warm orange gradients behind the peaks, and blues and greens in the water and trees. The composition is centred and symmetrical, shown in three side-by-side panels of the same tattoo on a thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Pavilion at Loch Aster had a sprung floor that gave under your heels like something alive, and on Saturdays my father wound the gramophone before the sun was properly down. From the back doors you could watch the water go copper, then the peaks behind it turning the colour of a peach skin, and the men in the band would stop tuning just to look.

Nobody danced to the view except me. I was sixteen and counted tickets at a card table by the door, and I watched Mr Gorse, who ran the ferry across the narrows, ask Nell Tarrant for every waltz from June until the lantern rope came down in September. She let him. She said the lake was too cold to swim in and too big to walk round, so a person had to be sensible about where they put their feet.

The turn came on the last Saturday of summer. The wind dropped off the peaks sudden and white, the pines along the shore began to roar, and the lanterns swung so hard the lights went out one by one. In the dark the floor kept moving under us. Nell took my hand and walked me to the doors, and we stood there while Gorse carried the ferry lamp down the jetty, a single light crossing the black water toward us.

When it reached the shore he was soaked to the collar and grinning like a fool, and Nell laughed out loud for the first time all season. My father started the gramophone again, and by the light of that one lamp we danced on the wet boards until the mountains came back out of the dark, pale grey against the first morning.
