Mountain lake sunset in a diamond frame

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A diamond-shaped panel shows snow-capped mountains above a still lake and a foreground of dark pine trees, with a pale sun setting behind the peaks. Linework is bold and black, with soft shading on the water and the grey slopes, and the sky is blended from orange to deep red. The design fills the frame centrally on the forearm, with the mixed palette of blues, reds and greys giving it a strong contrast.

Dear Nell,

The lamp room foreman has finally signed my papers, so Friday will be my last shift underground, and I still haven't worked out how to tell Mam. She thinks I'm mad to give up a wage that's paid on time, but my hands have started to shake on the handle of the coal cutter, and the men have noticed before I have.

On Sunday I walked up past the spoil heap to the top of the old drift, the way you and I used to when we were boys and swore the hills beyond the reservoir were the edge of the world. The lake was flat as a tray of tea. Dark pines stood along the near shore in ranks, like the props we set in the roof, and the peaks behind them had snow still lying in their creases. The sun was going down right behind the highest one, pale as a pressed coin, and the sky above it had gone from orange to a red so deep it looked wet.

Two birds came across between the peaks while I stood there with my cap in my hands. I counted them twice to be sure. Afterwards I drew the whole scene on the back of an old wage slip, with a diamond round it because that's the shape of the window in the pithead office, and the only thing I ever looked at through it was the clock.

I've folded the drawing into this envelope. Hold it up to the window at dusk and you'll see the sun sits exactly in the notch between the two peaks, the way it used to sit over the cricket field when we were boys. Come home in June for the wedding. Bring that husband of yours and make him carry the bags. Don't let Mam see the drawing before I do.

Your brother, Tom
