Cartoon girls and clouds on a full limb sleeve
Other · Colour · Photo
A full sleeve tattoo shows a blonde cartoon girl with a ponytail, wearing a rainbow-striped outfit, standing on a cloud beside red stars. Below, a second cartoon girl wears a large strawberry-shaped hat, with a rainbow arc visible beside her. The rendering uses clean outlines and soft cel-style shading over a pale blue sky with white clouds, on a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
In the high village of Carrow Gap, where the road over the pass froze before the sheep came down, the old women had a saying: never whistle when the rainbow is out. The children laughed at it until the summer the girl with the yellow plait stepped off the white cloud that sat on the ridge every morning.

Her stripes were the colours of the arc that hung over the far valley, and she walked into the village with one hand raised, as if she were hailing someone who had not yet noticed her. Mirrin, the baker's daughter, saw her first. Mirrin wore a great red hat shaped like a ripe strawberry, sewn from the leftover cloth of the harvest fair, and when she saw the stranger she dropped a whole tray of loaves in the mud.
The two girls did not get on at first. The cloud girl spoke of stars as if she had lit them herself, and Mirrin spoke of flour, prices and winter. But when the first snow shut the pass and the carters' road sank under drifts, it was the cloud girl who climbed the ridge each night and pinned red stars into the dark so the drivers could find the way down. Mirrin carried hot bread up the path every evening and stood beside her until the last star caught.
When spring came, the cloud did not return to the ridge. The rainbow stayed low over the village all summer, and the carters swore the stars had come down to sit in the bakehouse windows. Mirrin still wears the hat on market days. If you climb to the pass at dawn and wave, the old women say, someone on the far side will wave back.
