Cannabis leaf tattoo on a hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small cannabis leaf with five fine, pointed leaflets is tattooed on the side of a finger, near the base of the hand. The linework is thin and dark, with grey shading inside the leaflets. The hand is photographed outdoors against green foliage and grass, and a silver ring with a clear stone is worn on the same hand.

By August the seedling in Mrs Okafor's bread tin had grown taller than the railings on the ninth floor, and the whole block had an opinion about it. Dev from flat 41 said it looked like a fern left too long in the sun. The caretaker said it looked like trouble. I said nothing, because I was the one who had given her the seed, folded in a paper twist from a stall in Peckham, and I had not told her what the leaves would look like when they opened.

Every morning I climbed the stairs, since the lift had been broken since spring, and found her already on the walkway with a watering can and a flask of tea. She would lift the leaves one at a time, spreading them like a hand of cards, and count the points under her breath. 'Five is the good number,' she said. 'My husband used to say the sun always comes in fives when it wants you to notice it.' I never asked what he meant. She had a way of ending conversations by handing you a cup.
In September a letter came from the housing office about obstructions on the balconies. Mrs Okafor read it twice, folded it into a neat square, and put it in her pocket. That afternoon she asked me to help her carry the tin down to the car park, where the sun lay flat across the tarmac and the old sycamore dropped its keys onto the bonnets of parked cars.
We set the plant in the shade of the bin store. Its shadow fell across the ground in five long fingers, sharp at the tips, and she stood looking at it for a long time. 'There,' she said, and went back up the stairs without waiting for me.
