Heart hands with DON'T PANIC finger tattoo
Lettering · Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two hands are held together to form a heart shape around two crossed rolled cigarettes, with a forest path and autumn leaves behind them. The words DON'T PANIC are tattooed in black capital lettering across the fingers of the right hand, with clean, solid strokes. The image is in full colour from the natural greens and browns of the scene, while the tattoo itself is black ink.

Nobody at Hollin Halt had seen a train on the old line since the flood year, but Ada Brierley still walked the cutting every morning before the light, her boots loud on the sleepers. Her father had walked it for thirty-one years, and his rule was pencilled inside the signal box door: walk the line before dawn, or the line will walk you. She had never understood the rule until the morning she found the cigarettes.

They lay on the third sleeper past the water tank, two rolled tobacco papers crossed over each other and bound with a thread of red wool. Her father had taught her that sign when she was nine. Crossed like that, they meant the line was clear and somebody was coming home. Somebody had put them there in the night, and the leaves on the sleeper were still wet and unbroken.
She followed the path into the bracken towards the tunnel mouth, where the rails had rusted to the colour of old pennies. Under a flat stone she found a biscuit tin with a folded note inside. The capitals were pencilled, careful and square: DON'T PANIC. Beneath it someone had drawn two hands curled into a heart, and her father's initials, H.B., in the corner, dated the week before he died.
Ada put the tin under her arm and walked back along the cutting. She left the cigarettes exactly where she had found them, crossed on the sleeper where anyone coming up the line would see them, and went home by the road.
