Small black fine line tattoo of a crescent moon and a sun on the side of a finger, with a hand holding a cigarette.

Crescent moon and sun on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small crescent moon and a sun with short radiating rays sit side by side on the side of a finger. The moon is filled solid black while the sun is drawn in thin outline, and the ink is a single dark tone. The hand, wearing a silver ornate ring, fills the frame against a grey pavement background.

Dear Tom,

The cake arrived at half past four with the top tier sliding gently towards Mrs Okafor's vicarage hedge, which is why I am writing this on the back of a seating plan. Mum says you are not to worry. You will worry anyway, so here it is: the sun on the cake is facing the wrong way. Nobody has noticed except Gran, who says that's how the sun behaves at a wedding anyway, always going off in a direction nobody expected.

Gran has been up since five telling everyone about the summer of 1961, when she and Grandad painted the sign for the Silver Crescent café on Harbour Row. He did the moon, all solid black, because he said a moon should look like it has nothing to hide. She did the sun in outline, because she said if you filled a sun in you'd never see its rays properly. They argued all week over which should sit on the left. They never agreed, so the sign has always had the two of them side by side, neither giving way.

This morning the bride found a loose brass tack from that old sign tucked in Gran's handbag. She asked whether it could be threaded onto a chain for her to wear. I said yes before anyone could stop me, which I suppose makes me the family's worst diplomat.

I'll leave the seating plan here. Come home soon. Bring a better cake knife.

Love, Nell
