Owl and rose forearm tattoo

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A forearm tattoo shows an owl with spread wings inside a circular frame, with a pink ribbon, roses and green foliage around it. The linework is bold and the shading is soft, with detail in the feathers and the wings. Warm reds, oranges and yellows dominate, with touches of green and pink, and the hand is raised toward the top right of the frame against a speckled grey floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been falling on the market at Harrowgate Lane since Michaelmas, and the stallholders had stopped pretending it would let up. Mabel Coyle sold ribbons from a trestle under a tarpaulin that sagged like a wet sail, and every morning she tied a fresh pink length to the owl she kept in the window of her cart, a carved thing with its wings spread wide inside a brass ring.

The owl had come off a barge years before, traded for a sack of barley by a man who said it could see through rain. Mabel did not believe him until the autumn the water rose over the cobbles and a boy named Tobias Renn went missing among the lamps. She carried the owl down to the quay, held its ring up to the dark, and asked where the boy was. The owl turned its head, the way carved things should not, and looked at the river.

They found Tobias under the wharf, wedged against a piling with his coat snagged on a rope. Mabel untied her pink ribbon and bound it round the wet timber, and the rain stopped for the length of one breath. Red and gold roses climbed the piling that night, and the rain came back by morning, but nobody in the market ever again asked Mabel why her owl kept its eyes on the water.
