Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the bride's mother, for she has heard this one from me three times and still pretends it is new. Old Nan Pelling kept the harbour light at Porthkerris, and every winter the sea took something from the town. The year of this tale it took a grey billy goat with a beard like wet rope, who went off the cliff path after a ewe and was never seen again.

But the sea is a poor keeper of goats. Three nights later, Maud Tregear went down to the slipway with a lantern to fetch the nets, and there in the shallows stood a creature with a goat's head and horns curled like a fresh whelk shell, and below its belly a fish's tail, scales rippling down into the weed. It was the billy, and it was not pleased. "Your brother's boat is out past the Mouse Rock," it said, "and the squall is coming. Carry a word to him, and I'll turn the water."
Maud ran. She shouted the word across the bar, and the boat came home with its lamp still burning. When she went back down to the stones, the goat was waiting with the tide sliding off its tail. "Payment," it said. "Not gold. Sing me one song each new moon, and I'll keep your harbour safe." She sang, and it kept faith, and the boats came in every winter after that.
So when you lift your glasses tonight, pour a little on the slipway steps before you drink. Maud's grandchildren still do it, and if you listen past the gulls, you may hear something singing back.
