Infinity symbol with red heartbeat on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small infinity symbol sits on the inner wrist, outlined in black with a clean, even line. The right-hand loop is crossed by a thin red line that rises and falls like a heartbeat trace. The tattoo is centred on a plain background of pale skin and a light blue towel, and it is the only focus of the photo.

Dougie Marsh had the fair's old Gavioli open on a tarpaulin behind the dodgems when the rain came on, and he was not about to stop for it. The trouble was the music roll. Its paper ran in an endless loop, spliced at the ends so the waltz could go round for ever, and somewhere along the join someone had punched a ragged line of holes that played no tune at all.

Nell brought two teas across from the coconut shy and held his torch steady while he squinted at it. "That's not a melody," she said. "That's a pulse." He wanted to call her daft, but the holes rose and fell in a steady, stuttering rhythm, the same jump he had once watched crawl across a monitor in a Hull waiting room while the nurses pretended not to hurry.

They sat in the caravan until the rain eased, unrolling the paper across the table and finding the place where the loop closed. The old man who had sold him the organ had said the roll was older than the machine, that the holes were punched by a woman who could not sleep and wanted something to count. Dougie had never believed him. Now he traced the line with his thumb and counted, and it came out even every time.

At dawn he threaded the roll back over the drum and cranked the handle. The waltz started, bright and wheezing, and the rough little beat slid under the needle, round and round, the way it had been doing for longer than either of them had been alive.
