Captain America shield with quote on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A round Captain America shield with a white star sits on the inner forearm, with the words Sometimes you have to believe that heroes exist in black lettering below it. The shield has red and white outer rings and a blue centre with shading that gives it a slight dimension. The shield is the dominant element, and the lettering is set in a simple sans-serif style beneath it.

Every autumn the travelling fair came over the hill with its ghost train, its two tired mules and its strongman, Mr Bellamy, who kept a red tin shield on a nail above his caravan door. Tobias Crane ran the coconut shy beside him and had never once been allowed to touch it. "That's for people who've earned it," Bellamy said, and went back to his weights.

The year the rain would not stop, a girl came up to the wagons with her little brother on her hip. He was seven and had not spoken since their mother went off with the carter. She offered Bellamy two dozen eggs if he would let the boy watch him lift the iron weight, because somebody at school had told the boy that strongmen could stop lorries. Bellamy looked at the child for a long while before he agreed.
He lifted the weight over his head, then lifted the boy onto his shoulders and walked him the length of the field. When they came back he took the shield down from its nail and gave it over, saying it was a promise rather than a prize. The girl argued that it was too much. Bellamy said a thing doesn't become heavy until somebody forgets what it is for.
That night the boy slept with the shield under his pillow. In the morning, over the sound of the mules, he asked Tobias whether the rain would stop. "Sometimes," Tobias said, and found that he believed it.
