Sit yourself down, duck, the kettle's only just boiled. You'll have noticed the words over the hall door, the ones in that fancy looping hand. My husband's uncle painted them in 1961, and he did it with a single line of brush that never lifted from start to finish, because he'd bet the landlord he could. Nobody paid him for it. The landlord had a sense of humour, which is more than the bank ever had.

Cyril Dunn knew his Latin and nothing of the sea. He'd been a clerk at the timber yard for thirty-one years, counting planks that other men carried away. Every evening he walked the front with his hands behind his back, looking past the groyne at the Guernsey ferry, and every evening he said, tomorrow, Ivy, tomorrow I'll buy the ticket. Tomorrow never came, and the ferry kept sailing without him.
Then one March morning the tide came in grey and quick and the sailing was cancelled. Cyril sat on the bottom step with his shoes in his lap and laughed until he coughed. He said the sea had finally made up his mind for him, and he took it as a sign. He walked down to the harbour office, bought a return ticket for the afternoon crossing, and came back up the hill to pack his case.
He never got on that boat. He sat on the sea wall until the gulls had his chips, and when the sun came out he said the water looked like it had been waiting for him, and he'd rather keep it company than cross it. The return ticket is still in the frame beneath those words, dated the fourteenth of March and never punched. Mind the step on your way out, duck.
