Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the word Simple. written in flowing black script with a dot after the final letter. The strokes vary in thickness, with thin entry and exit lines and heavier downstrokes, as if made with a brush or pen. The plain white background and centred placement leave the lettering as the only subject.

Margaret had chalked the word on the board at the Palais every Thursday since the spring, and every Thursday the new girls laughed at her for it. Simple, she wrote, above the foxtrot counts, with a full stop, because Arthur had once told her a sentence without a stop was still looking for its end.

Arthur had taught her the steps in the back room of the Co-op, him counting in his bad voice while the tins of peaches stood stacked behind him. He never once let her lead. "Keep it simple, love," he would say, lifting her hand onto his shoulder as if it were the most ordinary thing in the world, and she had hated him a little for making it look easy.
Now the floor was crowded with couples taking the quickstep faster than the band. Margaret stood at the edge with chalk dust grey on her cardigan, watching a young man count under his breath and tread on his partner's toes. She wanted to go over and tell him the secret was not in the feet at all but in the pause before each turn, that half-second where you trust the other person to be there.
She didn't go over. She rubbed the board clean with the side of her hand, then wrote the word again, slower this time, the tail of the S curling round like a step that had finally come right. The band struck up. Somewhere a door banged, and she kept her eyes on the chalk and did not turn round to see who had come in.
