Fabulous script with flowing underline
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A drawing of the word fabulous in a cursive, joined-up script, with a looped leading stroke on the f and a long single line extending from both sides. The linework is monoline and even in weight, with no shading. The design is black on a plain white background with the composition centred.

Your hands are already dusted white when the first van pulls up outside Haddow Lane, and Mrs Okonedo is tapping the glass before you have the shutters fully up. She wants a celebration cake for her husband's sixtieth, and she has written the word on a folded card in a hand so looping it could be sung. Fabulous, the card says. Underlined twice, as if she didn't trust you to see it the first time.

You take the card to the bench under the strip light and study it while the ovens tick. The f swings down below the line like a dropped ribbon, and the rest of the letters lean into each other, joined at the shoulders, every one of them running out long on either side into a single unbroken stroke. You have a nozzle the width of a pencil lead and ten minutes before the proving dough needs knocking back. So you pipe it freehand, breath held, the tail of the underline running off the edge of the board and onto the cold steel where the flour settles.
By six the sky over the car park has gone the colour of weak tea. The cake sits in its box with the word across the lid in dark chocolate, and you realise you have not once lifted the nozzle off the page without going straight on. Mrs Okonedo arrives in a green coat and reads it on the lid. She laughs, one short surprised bark, and runs a gloved finger along the line. "He'll think I did it myself," she says, and you let her.
