Carpe diem script on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line script tattoo reading carpe diem runs diagonally up the side of the ankle. The linework is thin and even, in black ink, with slight variation in stroke weight that gives the lettering a handwritten feel. The pale skin and muted grey-green floor make the black ink stand out, and the sandal straps sit close to the tattoo at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Margit,

The ferry was late again, so I sat on the bollard outside the chandlery with my bag between my feet and watched the gulls fight over a split bag of chips. Your father's boat is still tied up at the far end of the quay, the one with the green stripe he never got round to painting over. Mr Pellow says the tide won't let anyone touch her until the spring springs, so she'll sit there another month, listing a little more every morning.
I found your old pencil case in the attic while I was clearing it out, the one with the tin lid and the rubbed-off sticker of a lighthouse. Inside was a scrap of paper folded four times, with your handwriting going uphill across it. Two words, slanting and joined, as if you'd been trying them out before you dared to write them properly. I didn't know you were still practising your loops at fourteen.
So I've decided, and you can tell me I'm daft when you're back. I'm getting the boat's name written on the inside of my wrist in that same slanting hand, and the day after the spring tide, we're taking her out past the breakwater whether Pellow approves or not. Bring the thermos and the good biscuits. The wind is still coming in from the west, and I don't intend to waste a single one of them.
Yours, with the chips still on my jumper, Annie
