Cartoon cat in glasses above a red rose

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon cat wearing round black-framed glasses and a purple bow sits above a large red rose in a wooden-looking base. The cat is drawn with bold black outlines and flat fills, while the rose uses red shading, darker linework on the petals, and small yellow-green leaves at the sides. The tattoo fills the upper arm on a light skin tone, with a plain black top and a blurred interior behind it.

Now sit down, you lot, and mind the pram. This is about the cat on the fourteenth floor of Harcourt House, the one with round spectacles and a purple ribbon, who was the only tenant that ever read the lease. Nobody else in that block could be bothered. The lift smelled of chips and wet coats, the bins caught fire twice a summer, and the council sent letters in a language only the cat could follow.

She kept a rose in a wooden tub on her balcony, red as a pillar box and twice as stubborn. Every morning she tipped her glasses down her nose and told it the news from the stairwell, which was mostly who had been shouting and who had been crying. The rose took it all in and never once gossiped. That was the arrangement, and the cat swore a rose would keep a secret better than any neighbour.

Then in February the lift stopped between the ninth and tenth floors and stayed stopped for three days. Old Mr Adebayo from the sixth had his pills in that lift, the boy from twelve had his football, and a young mum had a tin of formula she could not carry up the stairs. The cat did not climb down. She sat on her balcony and read every notice on the board aloud to the rose, slowly, until the engineer came up the stairs with a van and a grin. He never learned why the whole block knew his name by teatime. The rose did not tell, and neither did the cat.
