The tattoo shows the three Powerpuff Girls, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, clustered together in a cartoon style. The characters have bold black outlines and flat fills, with soft splashes of yellow, green and pink behind them. The design fills the lower leg against a dark studio floor, with strawberry-patterned socks visible at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Mum, you asked whether the galley on the Calder Lass is fit for human habitation, and I can tell you the cook is not, but the three hobs are magnificent. Our three hands on the line are sisters from Grimsby, Nell, Bea and Ruth, and the crew call them the Sugar Trio because they never stop moving and never stop talking. Nell takes the fryer, Bea the grill, Ruth the pastry. They keep a biscuit tin of food colouring under the sink, pink, green and yellow, and nobody touches it. Last month the chief engineer tried, and he has been eating his porridge plain ever since.

The captain's sixtieth fell in the worst weather of the year. Sponge trays slid across the deck every time the bow dropped, and the girls stood braced against the stove, arms locked, shrieking with laughter as the cake went up and down between them like a skipping rope. When it finally settled on the steel, pink at the rim, green in the middle and a yellow sun on top, Ruth outlined every slice in black icing, the way you would ink a comic panel. The captain ate two and wept a little, which Mrs Oyelaran says is the highest review a pudding can get.

I miss you terribly, and I have eaten nothing green since Sunday. Your loving son, Kit.
