A cartoon woman with a black bun and round glasses wears a blue top, framed by purple and green flowers. Bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills define the design, with a red banner across the bottom reading UGHHH. The tattoo is photographed straight on against a blue surface, with the lower leg and a black shoe at the bottom edge.

The last poster still had the wrong date on it, and Dolores Pike had been meaning to fix that since March. She stood on an upturned crate in the winter quarters outside Spalding, wind slapping the canvas over the empty ring, and peeled the damp sheet from the wagon door. Beneath it, the lion's name was still picked out in gold leaf: SAMSON, THE GREATEST ON EARTH.

Ferdinand Pellegrino came across the mud with his clipboard held against his chest like a shield. The council wanted the field back by Friday, he said. The elephant had gone to a retirement paddock near Skegness, the trapeze rigger had taken a job at a garden centre, and the Tuesday ticket money would not cover the diesel. Dolores said, 'Ugh,' in the flat, final way she had been saying it since she was nine, and he nodded as if she had made a sound of enormous sense.

She spent the afternoon in the caravan with a tin of green paint and a brush worn to a whisper. The purple and green garlands on the wagon panels had been done by her grandmother's sign painter in 1978, and every winter a few more petals flaked away. She restored them one at a time, leaning close with her glasses pushed up her nose, until the flowers looked the way they had the summer she first learned to walk on sawdust.

At dusk she unbolted the ticket booth, set out a single stool, and painted a new sign in careful red letters: ONE PERFORMANCE ONLY. Ferdinand came round the corner to find her sitting in the sawdust with her arms folded, scowling at the empty ring. He asked her what she was doing. 'Waiting for a customer,' she said, 'and I am not going to be happy about it.'
