Two cartoon cats in glasses on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two cartoon cat characters with round heads, small ears and black-framed glasses, one with a pink bow and the other with a blue hair tuft. Both are drawn with bold black outlines and flat fills, with the left figure wearing an orange top and blue shorts and the right wearing a red polka-dot dress with a green bow. The figures sit side by side against bare skin, with the design filling the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The spectacles had come out of a jumble sale tin in Ludlow, and by the first frost there were only two pairs of eyes in the whole of Hobb's Garden that needed them, so the sisters took turns. Mab wore them through the morning to read the seed packets on the potting shed shelf. Dilly, who had a bow of pink ribbon she would not take off for anyone, wore them after lunch to count the gooseberries, which she claimed were growing faster than they had any right to.

On the Tuesday before the rain, Mab carried the spectacles down to the bottom bed, where the old cabbage stalks stood like sentries, and found a letter pinned under a flowerpot. It was addressed to whoever kept the garden. The handwriting was small and careful, and she could only make it out by holding the lenses an inch from her nose, which set the whole page swimming like a pond with a fish in it.

Dilly was cross to be asked for her turn early. She tugged her polka-dot skirt straight and said the garden had never once asked anything of a cat that could not be answered by a nap. Still, she passed the glasses across, and Mab read aloud that the wall at the end of the lane would come down in spring, the rhubarb would be moved, and the gardener's wife would leave a dish of cream every morning if the hedge was kept tidy.

They agreed before Mab reached the end of the sentence. That night they sat on the wall together, one pair of spectacles passed back and forth between them, and watched the lamp come on in the cottage window. Neither said so, but they had decided the cream was the best part of the bargain, and the glasses could stay exactly where they were.
