Cartoon cat with bows and jewel chain on both legs

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

Two matching tattoos sit on the back of the upper legs, each showing a cartoon cat with a pink bow above a large purple ribbon bow. A vertical chain of small stars, hearts, gems, flowers and bows runs from the thighs down to the ankles on both legs. The outlines are bold and the fills are soft and flat in pink, purple, yellow, blue and green, with the person photographed from behind against a checkered floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mabel Ribbon rode in the wheelhouse of the herring boat Constance, and the crew of Skerrow harbour would tell you she was the only sensible one aboard. She wore a pink bow on one ear and a larger violet bow at her throat, tied each morning by the skipper's daughter, Ada, who said a cat with a good bow would never be lost at sea.

Each spring the crews strung charms on a length of tarred line along the rail. A yellow star for a calm night, a red heart for a wife waiting on the quay, a blue gem for a safe return, a flower for a man who had gone under and must be remembered. The line ran from the bow to the stern, and every man who came home unhurt tied on one more. Mabel sat on the coil at the top of it and counted them with her tail.

One November the Constance went out in a squall and did not come back by dark. The women gathered on the quay with lanterns, and Ada unhooked the charm line from the rail and walked it along the harbour wall, touching each bead and naming the men it stood for. When she reached the end there was one bead left, a green one, which nobody had claimed.

At first light the boat limped in with a torn sail and a broken oar, and Mabel was on the wheelhouse roof with both bows still tight. The skipper climbed onto the quay, looked at the line, and said that nobody could tie a charm on a cat, but a cat who kept watch all night had earned one anyway. Ada threaded the green bead onto the line herself, and Mabel stretched out in the sun and went back to sleep.
