The watch stopped on the third night out from Valparaiso, and Mr Pryce swore it was the cold, though I had seen him breathe on it twice and blame the lamp oil. I brought the tea round at eight bells as I always did, and found the passenger in cabin nine still at her table, pencilling a mermaid into the margin of a chart of the Horn.

Miss Vane had boarded with two trunks, one of tinned peaches for the captain's table and one of drawings. She showed me them without being asked: a fish in a bonnet, a shell curled like a snail's house, a cat with a grin wide enough to hold the whole rigging, and a small glass bottle labelled in her careful hand. 'Drink me,' she said, 'though not before the Horn. It goes sour after dark.' I took it for a joke meant for the cabin boy, and I was wrong.

We rounded the Horn on the fifth day in a fog so thick the bowsprit vanished. Then the cat was there, grinning above the foresail with no body beneath it, and the watch in my apron pocket began to tick though I had wound nothing. Cook swore he saw a woman with a comb riding the wake, and the tea in my jug was suddenly warm enough to scald.

We put in at Montevideo a week later. Miss Vane went ashore with one trunk and no peaches. The captain's log for that day records a sea as flat as a plate, and one line in my hand: Clocks correct. Tea hot.
