Nobody at Dolan's Dry Cleaning asked where the capes had been. They came in on Tuesday mornings in carrier bags, stiff with grit, and the shirts underneath were always split open along the ribs as if something had burst out from inside them. Maureen Fairclough, who had worked the steam press since the Thatcher years, said the rips were the only honest thing about the job.

The emblems were the trouble. A red shield would come out of the wash with its yellow edge bleached to cream, and Maureen would sit at the back bench with a pot of fabric paint and a fine brush, coaxing each one back to life. She saved the bat for last, because the ears had to be sharp enough to throw a shadow onto the lining, and she never got them quite right enough to please herself.

One Tuesday a bag arrived with a single glove in it, no name tag, and a note in biro that said only: he's gone across the river, keep his colours for him. Maureen hung the glove on the hook above the press and waited. The shop bell went every morning, and every morning she looked up hoping for a tall man with a torn sleeve, and every morning it was someone with a wedding dress or a pair of school trousers.

In the end she stitched the glove to the inside of the front door, fingers spread flat against the glass, so that everyone leaving the shop in the rain saw a bright red hand pressed to the pane from the wrong side. The bell rang a little louder after that, and Maureen swore it was the glove doing the ringing.
