Cartoon character and rose on ribs
Traditional · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A cartoon character with a white hood and ears, arms outstretched, sits within a large red rose surrounded by green leaves with purple tips. The design uses bold black outlines, flat fills and shaded leaf veins, with a yellow collar detail. The tattoo fills the frame against pale skin, with a dark garment visible at the top and a white cloth at the right edge.

The rose had been planted by my grandmother to keep the badgers out of the runner beans, and it had done such a thorough job that nothing short of the hedge cutter would get through it. So when the boy came crashing out of the wood at the bottom of Mill Lane, hood up and both arms flung wide, I assumed someone was chasing him. Nobody was. He had been falling, he said, and the rose had caught him, which was a fair description of what I could see.

He was stuck fast by the hood, the ears of it hooked on three separate thorns, and the more he wriggled the more the red petals folded round him like a fist. I asked him where he had fallen from. He pointed up past the oaks with great seriousness and said, from the top of the sky, where the rope bridges go. I told him the only rope bridge in Thornby was the one over the sluice and he could not have fallen from that unless he was very stupid. He said he was not stupid, only in a hurry, because the fair was on and he had promised a man with a striped tent that he would bring him back a bee.
We got him loose with the kitchen scissors and a great deal of swearing on my part, though he was lighter than I had expected, almost as if the rose had been holding him up rather than the other way round. He stood on the path, brushed the purple-tipped leaves off his shoulders, and thanked me with a bow so low his hood fell over his face. When he straightened up he was already running, and he did not look back.
In May the rose came out double. Tucked among the red blooms was one pale bud with two points at the top, and when it opened the petals had curled into the shape of a small white hood, hooked on a thorn. I left it there. The beans came up fine that year, and nothing dug under the fence.
