The 7.42 was cancelled again, so I am writing this on the back of a timetable at the end of platform two, where the bench still holds the warmth of whoever sat here before me. Mr Okafor from the signal box says the line will open by Thursday, but he said that last Thursday too. I have made friends with the cat that lives under the waiting room radiator. It is grey and sour and has no interest in me, which I find restful.

You will not believe what turned up in the lost property box on Monday. A tin, dented at one corner, with a cat's face on the lid painted in the bright pinks and violets you used to mix for the church fête banners. The cat wears a bow and has sugar-skull swirls across its cheeks, dots of teal for eyes, and beneath it a rose so full and pink it looks like it might drop petals onto the tracks. Nobody has claimed it. The ticket clerk wanted to throw it out, but I asked to keep it on my desk until someone came asking.

Inside were your letters, the ones you sent me from Halifax when we were girls and swore the trains would never take us apart. I had thought Mother burned them. I sat on the platform and read the lot while the rain came sideways off the canopy, and by the time I reached your last one I had decided to stop waiting for the 7.42.

I am getting the 11.15 to Leeds. Put the kettle on.
