Cartoon character in a blue leaf wreath on a lower leg
Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo
A cartoon woman with a dark bob haircut, round glasses and a light blue top sits at the centre of the design. She is framed by an oval wreath of blue leaves, and a black lace-like pattern runs along the top edge of the leg. The linework is bold and outlined, with flat fills and soft shading on the figure, and the photograph is taken close up at an angle across the leg.

Dear diary, or whoever is still reading this, the man who runs the Gull's Rest has banned the word "special" from the specials board, so Friday's fish is now listed as "Fish, Friday". I did not start this. Dad says the ledger is for guests, not for my feelings, so my feelings will have to go in here.

Mum swore the snow would be gone by Thursday. Mum also swore the boiler would last the winter. It is currently making a noise like a cow being asked a difficult question. Dad has put a bucket under the landing with a card on it that says NOT A BIN. Guests keep asking me what the little wreath means in the window, and I tell them it's a laurel for victory, and they look at the top of my head like I've said something unhinged.
The only person who gets it is Rosie in room four. She came for a long weekend three weeks ago and stayed because the Coast Road closed. Last night she found me in the kitchen eating cold beans from the tin and said, "You're allowed to be a bit of a nerd about things, you know." I said I wasn't. She pointed at my cardigan. Fair.
This morning the boiler finally gave up with a bang that rattled the spoons. Everyone stood in the hall in their coats, holding mugs of water that had been boiled on the hob. Rosie came down with her hair in a tea towel and handed me a pencil. The frost on the dining room window had gone thick and white, so I drew a wreath in it, nice and round, with a daft little face in the middle. Dad saw it and said, "Well, that's the most useful thing anyone's done all week." Rosie said it was victory. I'm choosing to believe her.
