Cartoon head with bob and glasses on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a simplified cartoon head sits on the forearm of a person whose face is not in frame. The head is filled in solid black, with a bob haircut and black-rimmed glasses picked out in plain negative space, plus a small yellow detail near the temple. The background shows dark clothing, a fine chain necklace and light brown hair against a pale skin tone.

Nell had spent four hours proofing a council planning notice that nobody would ever read, and the 271 had already gone past without slowing. She stood under the shelter on Oxford Road with her hands jammed in her coat, counting lit windows in the office block opposite, when the man beside her asked if she was the one who did the letters page.

"I proofed it," she said. "I didn't write a word of it."
He nodded at her forearm, where her sleeve had ridden up. The little black head sat there with its squared-off bob and its glasses like two bars of a cage, the yellow clip at the temple gone soft at the edges from being looked at for so long. "That's the one from the letter last spring," he said. "Some woman wrote in to say the drawing had stolen her sister's whole personality."
Nell laughed, which surprised them both. The bus came at last, lit up like an aquarium, and he got on first, turning at the top step to tell her the sister had since moved to Glasgow and now wore a tiny gold hedgehog.
Next morning, the notice still on her desk, Nell found the planning officer's name misspelt in the second paragraph. She fixed it, then, in the margin where no one would look, she drew a small yellow clip on the proof and sent it to press anyway.
