Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon character with a dark bob haircut, round glasses and a light blue top sits at the centre of the design, drawn with bold black outlines and flat fills. A wreath of blue leaves curves around the figure on both sides. The photograph is taken at an angle on a tattooed leg, with a sandal and a pale blue wrap visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lost property cupboard at Calder Vale station held everything the trains forgot: umbrellas, a stuffed owl, forty-one left gloves. Maud Pelling, who swept the platforms and kept her dark hair cut square above round spectacles, was the only one who ever looked inside the wooden box marked for nobody.

Inside the box lay a wreath of blue leaves, pressed flat and brittle, tied with green thread. Beneath it was a pencilled note: Give this to whoever waits longest. Maud never learned whose hand had written it. The station had been built by a man who liked tidy endings, and she suspected he had left the wreath there to be found by someone patient.

She waited. Each morning the 6.10 pulled in, and each morning she stood at the end of platform two with the wreath under her arm. A porter asked what she was doing. She said she was keeping an appointment. All through the winter a woman in a grey coat came to check the timetable board, never once looked up at the clock, and never once got on a train. Maud understood that this was the one who waited longest.

On the first warm morning in April, Maud crossed the line and laid the wreath on the bench beside her. "This was left for you," she said. The woman touched the leaves with one finger, and the 6.10 drew out without them. For the first time since the autumn she laughed, and the wreath stayed on the bench long after the platform had emptied.
