Maud had been sulking in the lavatory since half past nine, which at the Ashby Road Bakehouse counted as a formal resignation. Nobody had told her she would not take the Harrogate rosette. Nobody had needed to. The judges had looked at her frosting, which was the blue of a municipal swimming baths on a Sunday, then at the single cherry balanced on top like a bad hat, then at each other, and that was the whole verdict.
