Smiling pie slice with CUTIE PIE banners
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon pie slice with a closed-eye smile, pink blush marks and whipped cream topped with dotted swirls sits at the centre of the design. Two pink banners reading CUTIE and PIE wrap across the slice, with bold black outlines throughout. The tattoo uses flat green, pink, lilac and brown ink with soft shading on the cream and banners, and the design is centred on the skin.

Mind the sawdust, it's all that's left of the big top, so tread soft. You want to hear about the pie, do you? Sit down, then, though the tent has more holes than canvas these days.

Her uncle Ezra ran the Pemberton Brothers Travelling Show back when the ring still had a band and the bears still danced. By the last summer the crowds had dwindled to one man with a dog and a woman selling toffee apples from a pram. Ezra had one act left that paid: the pie slice. It was a green slice with cream piled on top, eyes shut, cheeks like two rosy coins, sitting on a stool in the middle of the ring. Children threw paper stars at it, and it smiled back. Mabel sewed its banners herself, CUTIE and PIE, and every night she wrapped them round its tin shoulders like a pair of arms.
The last night the rain came sideways and the canvas sagged like an old horse. Ezra stood at the centre pole and said the show was finished, and the pie would go on the bonfire with the rest. Mabel didn't argue. She carried the slice out into the wet, unwrapped the banners, and held it up to the one lamp still burning. In the dark, a boy who'd come every summer since the flood years started clapping, slow and steady, and the empty benches took it up one by one.
Ezra kept the banners. He never did light the fire. If you go past the old fairground at Hollin Fen on a still evening, you'll hear a faint clapping from the field, though nobody's seen the pie since. Now, who's for a cup of tea?
