Cartoon dinosaur and meteor on ribs

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A green cartoon brontosaurus with orange spots looks up at a grey meteor with a yellow and orange flaming tail, and the word Dangit sits in black lettering below it. Above, a partly visible grey banner with a red heart is tattooed on the side of the torso. The bold black outlines and flat, saturated fills of the dinosaur contrast with the greyscale banner, and the tattoo is photographed close up against pale skin.

Doris had been grazing the same fern for three weeks when the sky started showing off. Not the ordinary sort of showing off, either. Something grey and smug came scratching across the top of the Jurassic like a match struck on a cloud, leaving a tail of sparks that Doris found frankly vulgar.

'Oi,' said Alf, the stegosaurus two valleys over, who had opinions about everything and a bad knee to back them up. 'That's not weather.'

'No,' Doris agreed, lowering her long neck until her eyes were level with the rock. It had a fizzing little crown of fire and a face like an unhappy potato. 'It's a rock with a grudge.'

Ten minutes later the rock was closer and so was the realisation. Doris had been to the lake, the nests, the bramble gully where the young ones hid from her sneezes. She had never once been asked to make a decision in under a minute. She thought about the herd, the eggs in the reeds, the fern she had only just got the taste of. Then she simply shut her eyes and said the only word a brontosaurus of her standing could think of, loud enough to rattle the ferns for a mile.

'Dangit.'

The meteor, to its credit, looked mildly offended and then went on ahead, landing somewhere in the next county with a noise like a dropped tray. Doris opened one eye. Alf was staring. So, rather pleasingly, was the sky, which had clearly never been spoken to like that before. She went back to her fern, and it tasted, for the first time in weeks, exactly as good as it should.
