Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A single black line drawing of a stylised dog with an elongated body, a curling tail and a small looped detail near the head. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design sits horizontally across the lower back. The skin is pale and the background shows a light top and cream trousers.

Nobody paid to watch a dog jump through a hoop any more. The crowds had moved on to screens and motorway services. So I taught her the thing I had learned from my uncle on the dog tracks: how to take a bend low, how to stretch until her body was one unbroken line from nose to tip. Every evening we walked the empty field behind the caravans, her ears flat, my hand on her ribs, counting her breaths like coins.
In August a woman from the council arrived with a clipboard and a face that had already decided. She asked whether the animals were registered. I said yes, which was true, and that the dog was retired, which was not. Juno watched me across the grass, then bent her head to the loop near her own shoulder, the way she did when she wanted me to stop talking and start running.
We ran that night, the two of us, past the generator and out through the gap in the hedge where the ring had once been pegged. She did not look back at the big top. At the stile she stopped, turned, and waited for me to catch up, which is the only trick she ever really knew.
