Cartoon fairy tattoo on upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A woman seen from behind shows a colour tattoo of a cartoon fairy with blonde hair and teal wings, sitting with her knees drawn up. The linework is bold and clean, with soft shading on the wings and dress. The fairy sits on the upper back near the shoulder blade, against plain skin, with a bookshelf and a purple wall in the background.

Dear Maud,

Father says the Ellery Rock light has been dimming on the hour for a fortnight, and I'm the only one who knows why. There's a fairy in the lamp room. She has blonde hair tied up in a knot and teal wings the colour of the sea in May, and she sits on the brass rail with her knees drawn up under her chin, swinging one foot over the drop as if she has never once been afraid of falling.
She came the night the fog rolled in. Father was below with the fog signal, so I climbed up to trim the wick and found her perched on the glass, humming. She said the lamp was too bright for her liking and was eating the stars. I told her the stars were not hers to worry about. She said everything at night was hers to worry about, and a keeper who forgets that will put a boat on the rocks as sure as the tide turns.
I didn't believe her, of course. Then the Ada Rose came round the point with her lights out, heading straight for the reef, and I couldn't raise her on the lamp. The fairy hopped down, pulled a spare mantle from the cupboard with her small hands, and I swear she lit it with one look. The Ada Rose cleared the reef by the width of a tea towel. The skipper waved at the tower all the way into harbour, and I waved back at nothing but a blue wing flashing in the glass.
So she stays now. She asked for a jar of marmalade and a dry pair of socks, and she has given me instructions for trimming the wick that I'm following to the letter. Come at Easter if you can. Bring something sensible, and tell Mother not to fret.
Love, Ivy
