Nobody in the Westmarsh court had ever asked the princess what she thought about being kidnapped, and by the nineteenth time she had views. She sat in the solar with her arms folded over her pink silk bodice while the steward read out the morning's letters, each one a summons from some distant tower where a dragon, or a wizard, or an ambitious goat, had taken her hostage again.

The rota was pinned to the buttery door. Sir Hobb had been rescuing her since he was twelve and now needed spectacles to read the map of Bramble Keep. Her crown sat a little crooked from the last escape, when she had climbed down a rope of knotted curtains and landed in the moat. "I have a proposal," she said. "Send the letters to the bursar. He can pay the goat."

Hobb went pale and muttered about the king's orders, the honour of the realm and the perils of the moat. She let him finish. Then she took a quill, dipped it in the ink used for the royal accounts, and wrote a single line on the back of the nearest summons: Dear Sir Dragon, kindly keep me. I am told the view is lovely and the cakes are excellent.

The reply came back three days later, sealed with a blot of wax the size of a plum. The dragon had been sacked for lack of custom and was now a hat-maker in Ashcombe. The princess pinned it above the rota, took up her embroidery, and did not leave the castle again for a fortnight, which the whole court agreed was the most peaceful month in living memory.
