Mrs Harrow had been sweeping the same step for ten minutes when the fawn put its head through the gap in the hedge again. Teal light from the glass lantern over the post office door lay across the cobbles, and the young deer's eyes were enormous, round and wet, the way her grandson's had been when he was small enough to be frightened of thunder.

"You'll have the bread off the sill," she told it. It did not move. It only looked at the loaf cooling on the ledge with the solemn attention of a creature who had never once been told no.

Her neighbour Tom said the fawn had come down from the beech wood the week the surveyors came, when they pegged the hillside with little diamond-shaped flags of blue. Tom said the flags confused the animals. Mrs Harrow said Tom would say anything before his second pint.

On Thursday the fawn was gone, and so was the loaf. Mrs Harrow found a single hoof print in the flour on the step, and beside it a neat pile of beech nuts arranged in a diamond. She left a second loaf on the sill that evening, and in the morning the nuts were gone and a blue flag, bent and muddy, had been tucked under the lantern. She kept it on the windowsill beside the bread.
