Geometric fox head on a lower leg
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A geometric animal head, likely a fox, is drawn in single black lines and divided into angular triangular facets. The linework is thin and even, with shading created by small areas of parallel and angled lines within the shape. The tattoo is shown in black ink on pale skin against a plain background, with the foot visible at the bottom of the frame.

Every winter the fox came up from the river meadow to the walled garden at Hollin Cross, and every winter old Marjory Penhale left the cold frame propped for it. She had no fondness for foxes. They took her hens and her pigeons, and once a whole row of early peas, but she liked the way it sat square on the gravel path with its tail wrapped round its feet, looking at her as if she owed it a sum.

One January the frost came hard and stayed. The fox did not come for three nights, and on the fourth Marjory went out with a lantern and found it lying in the lee of the wall, its coat stiff with rime. She did not know what to do with a dead fox, so she did what her mother had done with a dead wren. She carried it into the potting shed and laid it in sacking beside the paraffin heater.
By morning the shed was bright and quiet, and the fox was gone. In its place, on the inside of the cold frame glass, the frost had grown into a shape she knew at once: a head cut into angles, every line straight, every facet catching the low sun. She stood in the doorway a long while. Then she walked down to the gate, drew back the bolt, and left it open, so that anything wanting in or out could manage on its own terms.
The garden has no fox in it by day. But the peas come back each spring, and nobody on the lane has lost a pigeon since.
