Colour tattoo of a cartoon fox and a floppy-eared hound beside the script words Best of Friends, on the outer thigh.

Cartoon fox and hound with Best of Friends script

Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cartoon fox curled upwards at the top and a floppy-eared hound standing at the bottom, with the script words Best of Friends set between them. The linework is bold and outlined, with soft shading on the orange and brown fur. Warm orange and brown ink dominates the composition, which fills most of the frame against plain skin.

Dear Tobias,

You will be furious that I have written, since you swore on the compost heap that you would never read another word from me. But the hedge came down on Tuesday, the one between the rhubarb and Mrs Okafor's washing line, and I have been sitting in the hole where it used to be ever since, counting the bricks the men left behind. Nineteen. I counted them twice to be sure.

Mrs Okafor has hung a bell on the gate now, so I cannot come through without ringing the whole street awake. The bell is a cheerful little thing. I dislike it nearly as much as I dislike the blackbird who laughed at me in March.

Here is what I meant to tell you before you trotted off to the allotments with that wretched rope toy. The apples on the old tree have come in small and sour, the way they did the year we were both too young to know better. I ate four and was sick under the shed. You would have eaten twelve and suffered nothing, which is why you are the better dog and I am the cleverer fox, and we agreed years ago that this was a fair division of labour.

Come to the gap at dusk. Bring your ears. I have left the gate open the width of a hound, which is not wide, but I have been practising my squeezing.

Yours, as ever, Rufus
