Black linework cartoon cat with pink cheeks and red inner ears, with a Love yourself script across its body, on the upper arm.

Cartoon cat with Love yourself script

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon cat with a round head and wide blue eyes peers over a rounded body outline, with a curled tail at the side. The script words Love yourself sit across the middle of the body, and the cat is drawn in bold black outlines with a white-toned interior. Small pink and red accents on the cheeks and ears are the only colour against the black linework.

The cat has been sulking on the coal sacks since Tuesday, and you have decided that this is your fault. You are the one who moved the stove, who put the kettle on the wrong ring, who forgot to tell Mrs Okonedo that the lock on the cabin door had been changed. Pepper does not care about the lock. Pepper cares about the tin of sardines you were saving, which is now at the bottom of the bilge, untouched and somehow still your problem.

The barge is called the Patience, though nobody on the Grand Union has ever said it without a laugh. She is narrow and green, and her paint has blistered along the cabin side, where somebody years ago painted the sentence you have been staring at all week: LOVE YOURSELF. You assumed it was a joke from the previous owner, a bit of cheerful nonsense for passing lock-keepers. Then the rain came and the letters ran, and you realised the lettering was the only thing on the boat that had ever been kind to you.

Pepper finally climbs down at dusk. She walks the length of the gunwale with her tail up like a question mark, stops at your boot, and sits on it. You do not move. The lock ahead is closed for the night, and the water lies flat as a plate under a sky going orange at the edges.

You tell her she's a terrible cat. She purrs anyway, loudly enough to rock the boat a little, and you decide that is as close to an apology as anybody on this canal is going to offer. Tomorrow you will find the sardines. Tonight you go below and paint the letters again, a little straighter this time.
