Two cartoon cats in a gold frame with Darling banner
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A white cartoon cat sits beside a smaller kitten with a pink bow, both shown in an oval ornate gold frame with a blue background. The bold outlines and smooth colour shading are set within a scrolled gold frame, and a ribbon banner beneath the frame carries the word Darling in black script. The composition is centred on the frame, with the skin tone and soft white fabric visible around the edges.

The pass was never meant for a lady's basket, but Madame Ostrava swore the carriage road was closed, so we set off on the goat track at dawn with my pearls stitched into the lining and the kitten riding on my shoulder like a hot-water bottle with opinions. She stared at a ridge of ice that threw the light back in blue bands, then at a shepherd's hut with a crooked chimney, then straight through me, which is how I knew she had decided on something. By the time I caught up she was inside the hut, curled in the straw beside a ewe and two lambs, her bow askew, purring as though she had paid for the room. The shepherd's wife, a broad woman with flour on her forearms, looked at me, looked at the kitten, and said only, "Yours?" I had spent a whole year calling that small pink creature darling as a courtesy, the way one wishes the postman good morning. I found I could not answer her.
We came down the far side the next morning with a wheel of cheese, a heel of bread, and a lamb's bell tied to her collar, which she wore with terrible dignity. At the bottom of the pass there is an inn with a gilt mirror above the bar, its frame all curls and tarnished gold. I stopped to straighten my ruff in it and saw two faces: mine, grey at the whiskers, and hers, peering up over my shoulder as if I were the one who needed looking after.
Darling, I said, and for once I meant every letter of it.
