The snow had sealed the lane since Tuesday, and you had stopped counting the guests who wanted to leave. Mrs Dunmore's kitten, the one with the pink bow tied at a jaunty angle, had claimed the warm hearth behind the bar as if she owned the place. You never could decide whether she was a cat or a small, fussy landlady in disguise.

On the fourth night the power failed. The lamps guttered, the kettle went cold, and a travelling clockmaker in the back room began to fret about a tin of gold leaf he needed by morning. You took a torch down to the cellar, and the kitten trotted ahead of you, bow bobbing, stopping on each step to look back as though she were counting you.

At the bottom, behind the cider barrels, was a hatch you had never noticed, and the cold air through it smelled of pine resin and old rain. The kitten sat before it, prim as a schoolmistress, and would not move until you knelt and found the iron ring. Beyond it a passage ran under the hill towards the village, where the generator house had been waiting all along.

When you came back up with a sack of candles and the clockmaker's gold leaf, the kitten was asleep on the bar, her bow askew. Mrs Dunmore never believed the story about the hatch. She only nodded and poured you a whisky, and the cat opened one eye and seemed to smile.
