A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the Tuesday matinee the big top held more rain than people, and Marjorie Quill was still polishing the brass ring on the ringmaster's stand as though a crowd might come back for it. Bertram was already in his spot, perched on a tin bucket balanced on a painted stool, his red eyes fixed on the flap where the audience usually came in. He had been the star of the Pemberton Brothers Travelling Circus for eleven years, which for a frog was a considerable age, and his green skin had gone dull at the edges from the damp.

The act was simple. Bertram stretched his long legs out like a swimmer, flung himself off the tower of buckets, and landed with a wet slap in the bowl Marjorie held out at the bottom, and every night the crowd roared. Last summer the roar had shrunk to a cough. Today there was only one child in the front row, a girl in a yellow mac swinging her wellingtons and staring.

When the organ started up, Bertram did not climb the tower. He sat on the lowest bucket, lifted one arm high, then the other, and waved them at the girl as though he were the one who had been waiting all along. She waved back, solemn as a bank clerk. Marjorie felt something loosen in her chest that had been tight since the brothers sold the elephants.

Afterwards she lifted him from the bucket, meaning to carry him to the pond behind the lorries. He wriggled out of her palm before she could stop him, cleared the mud in one long kick, and landed in the reeds with a sound that was, she decided, a little like applause. She stood in the wet grass until the lamps went out along the field.
