Dark creature with flaming tail on the stomach
Other · Mixed · Photo
A hand-drawn style tattoo shows a dark, hunched creature with pale wide eyes, a small raised arm and two short legs. Its tail is banded with pink stripes and ends in a small orange and yellow flame. The black and grey body has a mottled, textured fill, and the figure sits centred on bare skin above the waistband of dark trousers.

The thing under the shed had been nibbling my slug pellets for a fortnight before I thought to look at it properly. It squatted in the dark between the water butt and the rhubarb, all hunch and hollow stare, and when I shone the torch on it, it blinked its great pale eyes and lifted one hand as if to ask me to mind my own business.

Frost came early that October. I stood at the back door in my dressing gown, watching the beans go silver, and thought of the sixty pounds of seed I'd sown in March. Then I heard the scrape of the compost lid. The creature had come out, dragging its long banded tail across the path like a broom, and it stopped by the first cloche and turned to look at me over one shoulder.
It was ridiculous. It bent its knees, pressed the flame at the end of its tail against the bottom of the plastic, and one by one the cloches began to breathe. Little orange sparks ran up the rows. Blackened leaves curled and stayed green. By midnight it had walked the whole plot, tail flickering like a match someone forgot to blow out, and it left a line of warm footprints in the frost that didn't melt.
In the morning the beans stood tall and the tail was only a pink stub. The creature was gone, but on the back step lay a crust of bread, nibbled neatly around the edge, and beside it a scorched scrap of cardboard with a charcoal scrawl I took to mean thank you, or possibly more bread.
