Cartoon mice and thread spools on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two cartoon mice, one in a red outfit and one with a rounded orange body, alongside a top hat and two spools of thread in teal and green. The linework is bold and dark, with solid fills and only light shading on the mice. Red, orange and green ink dominate against the pale skin, and the wrapped thread runs across the lower arm to link the figures.

You have been stitching the hem of the Queen's cloak since the bells rang for matins, and your partner, the one with the lopsided ear, is already complaining about the thread. Teal, she says, is for the kitchen maids. The palace wants green, the deep green of the moat in August, and there is only one spool of it left in the whole kingdom of Varnholt, wound on a bobbin the size of a cartwheel in the Chancellor's cellar.

So you go down past the wine barrels with a candle in one paw and your grey felt top hat, your grandfather's, tipped back on your head for luck. The cellar cat is asleep on the spool. You do not wake it. You ease the thread free a finger's length at a time, and the cat sighs and rolls over, and you are back up the stairs before the clock strikes the half hour.
Halfway up, the thread snags on the banister and runs away from you in loops across the flagstones, out under the door, around the leg of a sleeping guard, and back again. By the time you reach the sewing room it has tied the whole corridor together, and your partner is standing in the doorway with her arms folded, laughing so hard she has to hold the frame.
The hem is finished by dawn. The Queen wears the cloak to the spring fair and never once notices the stitch that runs green and crooked along the left seam, which is yours, and which is the only part anybody remembers.
