Blue cartoon ghost tattoo on an arm

Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon ghost with a smiling face, outlined in dark blue and shaded in light blue, sits across the arm in the centre of the frame. A faint outlined spider or swirl motif appears at the upper left, partly cut off by the edge of the photo. The photo is taken at an angle against an indoor background of framed pictures and shelves, with the tattoo lines and blue shading clearly visible.

The ghost came up the lamp road the night the colliery siren stopped for good, and you were the only one on Gelli Terrace still awake to see him. He was not a frightening ghost. He was round and pale blue and grinning like a boy who has broken a window and means to own up, and he drifted along the wall of the chapel with his sheet trailing behind him like a wet flag. Your nan had always said the dead keep to the hillside, but the dead, it seems, had not read the notice about the closure.

He wanted a spider back. That was the whole of it, once he had got his breath, which he did not need but took anyway out of habit. Twenty years before, Mr Pugh's cat had got into the Institute and eaten the spider that lived in the gents, a fat patient creature called Gladys, and the ghost, who had been Ivor Jenkins then and was very fond of Gladys, had never got over it. You told him the cat was long dead. He said that was no excuse.

So on the last Saturday of the strike you walked him up to the old tip with a jam jar, and the two of you crouched in the nettles for an hour while the ghost hummed and the sun came up over the pit wheel. A spider crept out of the rubble, grey and sensible. The ghost wept with joy, and then he was gone, leaving only a faint blue smudge on the air where he had been, and a jam jar with nothing in it but a spider that had already made up its mind to go home.
