"Where'd you get that?" said Marisa, who ran the lookout from a bathtub full of old phone books.

Podge didn't answer straight away. He chewed, swallowed, then pointed a flipper back down the tunnel, where a splash of rainwater was still settling on the grating. Three weeks earlier the pizza van from the Ferrer Road estate had been parked above the storm outlet, and its owner, a man called Dennis with a moustache like a dropped doormat, had left the back hatch open to cool a tray. The tray had gone cold. Podge had not.

"He cried," Podge said, mouth full. "Dennis. Over the cheese."

Marisa groaned. Everyone knew Dennis had lost his sister's recipe in a flood, and the slice was the last of a batch he'd been saving for her birthday. Podge had been carrying the guilt like a backpack ever since. So at dawn he took the rest of it, the crust still curled like a shell, and climbed back up to the pavement. He set it on the van's step with a note in his best handwriting: Still warm. Sorry about the bite. Dennis found it at six, laughed so hard he had to sit down on the kerb, and that is how the drains came to owe a pizza man a favour.
